CFP - Animals History at CHAM Conference 2026

Chair:

Nina Vieira, CHAM-NOVA FCSH

Carla Vieira, CHAM-NOVA FCSH

Catarina Simões, CHAM-NOVA FCSH

 The interdisciplinary field of Animal Studies is bringing forth a growing scholarly interest in the subject of human-animal relationships across the humanities and social sciences at large. Animal-centred approaches argue for the vital role of nonhuman animals in people’s individual and collective lives, acknowledging historical entanglements of mutual dependency between human and nonhuman actors.

This panel aims to discuss how animal movement shaped human practices and ways of life throughout different historical periods, and in diverse cultural and geographical contexts. In one hand, debating the importance of the ecological movement of animals, i.e. their natural activity and mobility in shaping people subsistence, settlement and wealth, animal management practices, transhumance, or animal domestication; on the other hand, highlighting the impact of the forced movement of animals, namely their displacement, circulation and involvement in regional and global trade networks.

We encourage the submission from scholars at different career levels, from history and archaeology, but also literature and the arts, in the following topics, or others that fall within the scope of this panel:

  • energy generated by the movement of animals;
  • animal-human historical migrations;
  • animal transport and transport through animals;
  • diasporic thinking applied to animals;
  • circulation of preserved species, animal body parts and by-products;
  • spatial analysis and digital humanities.

Keywords: Animal History; Animal Studies; Multispecies Entanglements; Migration; Diaspora

Call - Conference session 'Beyond the shoreline: Coastal Dunes, Aeolian Processes, and Human Impacts'

Conference session 'Beyond the shoreline: Coastal Dunes, Aeolian Processes, and Human Impacts' - EGU Conference - April 14-19, 2024

Session Details:

Convener: Glenn Strypsteen

Co-conveners: Michel Riksen, Jan-Markus Homberger, Andreas Baas, Kathelijne M. Wijnberg

Abstract Submission Deadline: January 10, 2024 13:00 CET

EGU Conference Dates: April 14-19, 2024

Location: Vienna, Austria

Session Overview:

Coastal dunes, essential for safety and habitat development, are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change factors. Increased storm events, shifting wind patterns, and rising sea levels are influencing the long-term evolution of coastal landscapes, creating a complex interplay of internal dynamics within the eco-physical system.

Despite qualitative insights into individual factors shaping coastal dune landscapes, a critical gap exists in quantifying their integrated effects on a landscape scale. This session aims to bridge that knowledge gap by exploring the intricate relationships between coastal dunes, aeolian sediment transport, human interventions, climate change, and ecosystem functions.

Why Participate?

  • Explore cutting-edge research in coastal dunes, aeolian processes, and human impacts.
  • Foster knowledge exchange through field measurements/experiments and modelling.
  • Contribute to the development of management strategies for safeguarding coastal ecosystems.

V Encontro REPORT(H)A

V Encontro REPORT(H)A

Announcement: Conference Venue for ESEH 2025

The 13th ESEH conference will take place in Sweden!

The proposal “Climate Histories” brings together three universities and several departments in central Sweden engaging in Environmental History and an organising group involving several more Swedish universities.

The proposed theme for the conference is Climate Histories, the theme name is chosen as it alludes both to climate reconstruction and climate-society history, the historiography of climate research and to storytelling in terms of representations of the experience of living with climate uncertainty. The theme is not only timely (and acutely so) but will also attract a broader audience both from within the field of history and also other disciplines. In addition, we hope to stimulate more popularised conversations linked to the conference.

The conference will be organised by the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History (AAH, UU) and the Department of History (Hist, UU), both at Uppsala University. Other lead partners are the Department of History, Stockholm University (Hist, SU) and the History of Science, Technology and Environment, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. Supporting departments are the Department of History, Linnaeus University (Linné) and the Department of Historical Studies, Gothenburg University (GU).

Humans and Aquatic Animals in Early Modern Africa and Americas

Humans and Aquatic Animals in Early Modern Africa and Americas

Cristina Brito

Humans and Aquatic Animals in Early Modern America and Africa

This book deals with peoples’ practices, perceptions, emotions and feelings towards aquatic animals, their ecosystems and nature on the early modern Atlantic coasts by addressing exploitation, use, fear, empathy, otherness, and indifference in the relationships established with aquatic environments and resources by Indigenous Peoples and Europeans. It focuses on large aquatic fauna, especially manatees (but also sharks, sea turtles, seals, and others) as they were hunted, consumed, venerated, conceptualised, and recorded by different societies across the early colonial Americas and West Africa. Through a cross-cultural approach drawing on concepts and analytical methods from marine environmental history, the blue humanities and animal studies, this book addresses more-than-human systems where ecologies, geographies, cosmogonies, and cultures are an entangled web of interdependencies.
