No mês de dezembro decorreu mais um encontro da Report(H)a, desta vez acolhidos pelo CITCEM. 

O encontro contou com as comunicações de mais de 30 investigadores e as palestras dos especialistas Marcus Hall (University of Zurich ) e Tim Soens (University of Antwerp).

Session Overview:

Coastal dunes, essential for safety and habitat development, are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change factors. Increased storm events, shifting wind patterns, and rising sea levels are influencing the long-term evolution of coastal landscapes, creating a complex interplay of internal dynamics within the eco-physical system.

Despite qualitative insights into individual factors shaping coastal dune landscapes, a critical gap exists in quantifying their integrated effects on a landscape scale. This session aims to bridge that knowledge gap by exploring the intricate relationships between coastal dunes, aeolian sediment transport, human interventions, climate change, and ecosystem functions.

Why Participate?

• Explore cutting-edge research in coastal dunes, aeolian processes, and human impacts.
• Foster knowledge exchange through field measurements/experiments and modelling.
• Contribute to the development of management strategies for safeguarding coastal ecosystems.

Call for thematic dossiers: HoST – Journal of History of Science and Technology (2025)

HoST - Journal of History of Science and Technology, recently indexed by Scopus, is an open access, on-line peer-reviewed international journal devoted to the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, published in English by a group of Portuguese research institutions and Sciendo. HoST encourages submissions of original historical research exploring the cultural, social and political dimensions of science, technology, and medicine (STM), both from a local and a global perspective.

Past thematic issues have dealt with topics as diverse as circulation, science communication, natural history, or the relation between science, technology and politics. Future issues might deal with both established and emerging areas of scholarship. The editors of HoST are looking for proposals for two thematic dossiers to be published in 2025 (HoST volume 19, issue 1-June; issue 2-December).

Each thematic dossier should be prepared by the guest editor(s) and include four research papers along with an introduction.

Proposals should include the following items:

An abstract describing the topic for the thematic dossier and its significance (500 words);

A list of the contributors along with the titles and abstracts (300 words each) of the four research papers;

Brief CVs (300 words) of the guest editor(s) and authors.

The guest editor(s) and the contributors must be prepared to meet HoST's publication schedule:

Deadline for the submission of proposals (general abstract, paper titles and abstracts, and brief CVs) - 20 January 2024

Deadline for the submission of research papers to be published in the June 2025 issue - 31 July 2024

Deadline for the submission of research papers to be published in the December 2025 issue - 30 December 2024

Proposals will be subject to approval by the Editorial Board and authors will be informed of the outcome by February 2024.

No decorrer do V Encontro Report(H)a realizou-se a reunião dos membros da rede Report(H)a, onde se partilhou o trabalho que tem sido desenvolvido, nomeadamente a articulação com a European Society for Environmental History. A todos os membros foi feito um apelo de colaboração no sentido de divulgação de eventos, publicações e projetos. Foi ainda apresentada e aprovada a proposta de organização do próximo encontro Report(H)A, por parte do CITCEM / FLUP, com o tema “Counting (multi)species - how the future is behind us? (Re) reading environmental archives and methodologies”, a decorrer no ano de 2025.

During the V Report(H)a Meeting, a gathering of the members of the Report(H)a network took place, where the work that has been carried out was shared, particularly the collaboration with the European Society for Environmental History. An appeal for collaboration in the promotion of events, publications, and projects was made to all members. Furthermore, the proposal for organising the next Report(H)a Meeting, by CITCEM / FLUP, with the theme "Counting (multi)species - how the future is behind us? (Re) reading environmental archives and methodologies," to be held in 2025, was also presented and approved.

Um encontro enérgico!

No dia 19 do mês de outubro, os participantes do V Encontro REPORT(H)A (Rede Portuguesa de História Ambiental) juntaram-se na Universidade do Minho, em Braga, para discutirem a energia na História, partindo do enfoque disciplinar ambiental (Energia e desafios socio-ambientais).

A investigação de Nuno Luís Madureira, primeiro keynote do encontro, trouxe-nos as ‘surpresas’ das transições, oferecendo uma perspetiva histórica sobre os processos de industrialização e as consequentes mudanças estruturais dos padrões de produção e consumo energético. O primeiro dos sete painéis, “Fontes de energia, crises e transições I”, aproximou a visão medieval, moderna e contemporânea acerca dos constrangimentos do consumo de combustíveis (em contexto de instituição religiosa ou de indústria metalúrgica), da exploração das paisagens (a utilização de arbustos para produção de carvão vegetal) e da reutilização da matéria (permitindo a renovação do ciclo do nitrogénio em zonas agrícolas). Em “Políticas, Protesto e legalidade”, discutiram-se o modo como as transições ecológicas se associam a vastas reconfigurações jurídicas, também acompanhadas pelas reações comunitárias. Em “Espaços, paisagens e patrimónios I”, trouxe-se à colação a discussão do governo dos comuns, da educação patrimonial e das fronteiras artificiais e naturais.

Steve Mentz inaugurou o dia 20 de outubro com uma palestra que nos fez viajar pela literatura e pelo futuro dos oceanos. A sessão “Fontes de energia, crises e transições II” debateu o papel do eucalipto como potencial recurso energético, as estratégias de aprovisionamento do espermacete e a paisagem marítima no enquadramento das energias renováveis. De seguida, Sofia Teives Henriques repensou os desafios passados e futuros através da sistematização dos consumos energéticos em contexto urbano comparado. A sessão “Espaços, paisagens e patrimónios II” conectou a crise das reservas florestais e espécies frutíferas no Portugal moderno com plataformas de atividade cívica, tendo em vista o acompanhamento do desmantelamento de uma ex-refinaria de petróleo. A sessão “Métodos, práticas e desafios” como que nos deixou a pensar nas potencialidades sem fim do campo ambiental, pois colocou como objeto de análise as aves de rapina, os fogos nos baldios e as doenças e epidemias.

Ao longo dos dois dias, cerca de cinquenta palestrantes, de várias instituições académicas e profissionais, procuraram partilhar perspetivas enunciadas a partir de diferentes áreas disciplinares. Criou-se, assim, uma plataforma de debate para entender os desafios historiográficos que colocam a energia no centro da atualidade, frente à discussão atual sobre energias renováveis e sustentabilidade. O encontro foi mais longe, ao entender as suas múltiplas dimensões: energia-combustível, energia-recurso, energia-património. Desde a escala local, partindo para a nacional e internacional, mostrou-se como o tópico energia não cessa de motivar uma reflexão transdisciplinar socio-ambiental, principalmente nestes tempos conturbados. Vemo-nos no Porto, em 2025, no VI Encontro REPORTHA!

The 13th ESEH conference will take place in Sweden!

The proposal “Climate Histories” brings together three universities and several departments in central Sweden engaging in Environmental History and an organising group involving several more Swedish universities.

The proposed theme for the conference is Climate Histories, the theme name is chosen as it alludes both to climate reconstruction and climate-society history, the historiography of climate research and to storytelling in terms of representations of the experience of living with climate uncertainty. The theme is not only timely (and acutely so) but will also attract a broader audience both from within the field of history and also other disciplines. In addition, we hope to stimulate more popularised conversations linked to the conference. 

The conference will be organised by the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History (AAH, UU) and the Department of History (Hist, UU), both at Uppsala University. Other lead partners are the Department of History, Stockholm University (Hist, SU) and the History of Science, Technology and Environment, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. Supporting departments are the Department of History, Linnaeus University (Linné) and the Department of Historical Studies, Gothenburg University (GU).
